What is a kinship DNA test?
People choose kinship DNA testing for a variety of reasons. It can be curiosity whether a particular person is your relative, or the need to resolve internal family matters.
By comparing the DNA profiles of two individuals, it is possible to express the probability with which these two individuals are biologically related.
Types of kinship tests:
We currently offer an informative (the test has no legal force) two-person kinship test for the following kinship models:
- Siblings
- Half-siblings
- Uncles, aunts — children of siblings
- Grandparents — grandchildren
- First-degree cousins
- Great-grandparents — great-grandchildren
Interpretation of results:
Usually, the result of a kinship test is expressed as the probability of kinship in percent (%).
As it is assumed that the initial probability in a standard case is 50% (50% that the persons are related and 50% that the persons are unrelated), then:
- any result above the 50% mark shall be interpreted as supporting the relationship;
any result below the 50% mark shall be interpreted as a result denying the relationship;
in addition to the result in percentage, other information is provided to help better understand the test result.
Further interpretation of the result, for example, if the result is 70%, depends on the client because only he/she knows other facts, and evidence whether the analyzed relationship is possible or not.
The results of a kinship DNA test are informative and cannot be used to resolve legal matters unless the test is ordered by a court!
Questions about testing:
- How old should the child be for testing?
Radniecības DNS testus var veikt jebkurā vecumā, arī tikko dzimušam zīdainim. Tā kā tiek ņemts tikai siekalu paraugs, tas bērniņam nav ne sāpīgi, ne bīstami.A kinship DNA test can be performed at any age, even for a newborn baby. Since only a saliva sample is taken, it is neither painful nor dangerous for the baby. - What samples are required?
A few hundred cells are enough for the test, so the safest and most convenient option is a saliva sample — a swab from the oral mucosa. This is exactly the sample we use for standard testing. Samples of other tissues can also be used for an additional fee - earwax, blood, chewing gum, hair with "roots", cigarette butts, etc. In case of a non-standard sample, we recommend that you contact us beforehand by calling or writing to info@genera.lv. - What results will I receive?
You will receive a description of the test, including the test subjects, testing methodology, equipment and reagents, and the values characterizing the test results. - How are the test results communicated?
The client receives the report only through the method of his/her choice: by e-mail, as a registered letter, or at the laboratory in person. Of course, the customer can leave his/her phone number and agree that an employee will call and announce the result, however the results will not be provided by phone if the customer calls the laboratory himself/herself.
